Mini Yoga Bolster

A mini yoga bolster is a small, firm cushion for the places a full-size bolster is too big. Ours is 35cm long and 13cm across, weighs about half a kilo and is filled with buckwheat. Most people use it in restorative and yin yoga, under the head and neck when lying on the back, under the shoulders, or in the small of the back.

The cover is organic cotton and comes in five colours: black, purple, teal, red and green. There are two zipped covers. The inner one holds the buckwheat, so you can open it and take some out for a softer, lower cushion or top it up if you want it firmer. The outer cover comes off for washing, and there’s a carry handle at each end.

How to use it

Lying on your back, slide the mini bolster under your neck so your head can rest without tipping back. Some people prefer it across the shoulder blades in a gentle chest opener, with the head on the floor or on a folded blanket.

In yin poses it fills small gaps: under the ankles in a kneeling pose, under a knee that doesn’t reach the floor in butterfly, or under the forehead in a forward fold. It’s light enough to put in a bag with your mat, so teachers often bring one for students who need a little extra height.

Because you can take buckwheat out, it’s worth trying the pose first and adjusting from there. Start with it full, then remove a handful at a time until it feels right.

Care

Take off the outer cover and machine wash it on a gentle cycle. Keep the inner cover and buckwheat out of the wash, and store the bolster somewhere dry. If you remove fill, keep the spare hulls in a sealed bag so you can put them back later.
