Massage Balls

A massage ball lets you press into one tight spot at a time, using your own body weight against a wall or the floor. It gets into places a foam roller can’t reach, such as the side of the hip, the arch of the foot or the muscle beside your shoulder blade.Ours range from 4cm to 9cm across, in materials from firm rubber and cork to silicone and EVA foam. The 6cm lacrosse ball is the one customers buy most.

The lacrosse ball is firm rubber. Cork is also firm, but lighter and without a rubber smell. EVA foam has a little give, which suits the feet and hands. The silicone hex ball is shaped like bent knuckles, so its pressure is more pointed than a round ball's.

Peanut balls are two balls joined with a dip in the middle, so they sit either side of the spine. We have them in cork, 12cm and 15.5cm long, and in silicone. The muscle recovery set has five EVA balls in a mesh bag, including a peanut and a spiky ball.

Our foam rolling how-to has a section on massage balls, and the rollers are in the rest of foam rollers and massage balls.

What size massage ball should I buy?

A 6cm ball, such as the lacrosse ball or the cork ball, works on most of the body. A 4cm ball suits the hands and the arch of the foot, and a 9cm ball spreads the pressure over bigger areas like the glutes and upper back.

How long should I stay on one spot?

Most people pause for 20 to 30 seconds on a tight spot, breathing normally, then move on. Keep the ball off bones, joints and the spine itself.
