If you’re new to yoga, a strap is an inexpensive prop that helps in a lot of poses. It lets you do the shape of a pose while your hamstrings and shoulders catch up, so you aren’t straining to reach your feet.

How to use it

Start with the D-ring. Feed the free end through both rings, then fold it back through the inner ring and pull. That gives you a loop that stays the size you set. Lift the top ring and the loop loosens.

For your first stretch, lie on your back with your knees bent. Loop the strap around the ball of one foot and straighten that leg towards the ceiling. Hold the strap with both hands, let your shoulders rest on the floor, and only go as far as you can with a straight leg. Swap legs after a minute.

A strap also helps in seated forward folds, and in binds where your hands don’t quite meet behind your back: hold the strap between them and walk your hands closer. At 180cm it handles both without much spare to manage.

Care

Hand wash in cold water and hang it to dry. At 180cm it rolls up small, so you can keep it in your mat bag and have it there when you need it.
